TWSF goes to the Big Apple, next stop: N.Y. Cake

My last semester of college was mostly filled with general education courses (scuba diving anyone?), so I had a lot of extra time to enjoy those last months of freedom before entering the corporate kingdom. I really started to get into cooking and baking and decided to sign-up for an extra-curricular: a weekly Wilton cake decorating course at Michael’s arts and crafts. Although my roommates teased me endlessly (what 21 year old signs up for a cake decorating course?), I highly recommend this class for all you bakers out there. The course requires you to buy the essentials, a tackle box of beginner decorating tips, colors, and a cake pan. Being on a college budget, I didn’t expand much beyond the required. This weekend I found myself in baker’s heaven, and treated myself to a few new tools to add to my old cake kit.

On our walk from Eataly to Chelsea Market, we stumbled across a massive baking supplies shop, N.Y. Cake and Baking Distributor. Chuck kindly allowed for me to indulge in this side trip and I must say, this place was totally awesome. At first I was a bit overwhelmed, this store was pretty ridiculous. Cake pans, spatulas, sprinkles, flowers, you name it, they had it. The walls were covered in baking supplies and I timidly walked down the aisle just taking it all in. After my head stopped spinning, I was able to focus and leave N.Y Cake with a big a** cake pan, some decorating tips, a tart pan, and a big smile. If you are in the area and need specific baking supplies, this is absolutely the place to visit.
