Thai X-ing

TWSF loves one-of-a-kind dining experiences. On Saturday we reserved seats at Thai X-ing, our new favorite Thai joint located in the U Street corridor of DC. Chef Taw Vigsittaboot cooked us traditional Thai recipes passed down by his family out of this quaint townhouse turned restaurant. We loved the quirks (tables in the middle of a living room, putting our coats on the bed in the middle of the living room as if you were at a family party, and the bird cage home to a live pet bird) and were totally romanced by the intimate setup complete with a candlelit dinner. Thai X-ing provided us a memorable dining experience that could not be recreated at any establishment in DC.

Detailed review after the jump!

Upon arrival, we made our way up to the second floor landing us in someone's actual kitchen complete with a washer/dryer and a fridge full of eggs. We found it rather endearing, and continued to chill our wine while waiting for our table. Once we were seated, the food immediately began arriving.

Rockfish
The food was absolutely amazing. On Fridays and Saturdays, Taw prepares a fixed price menu that includes chef's choice of soup, appetizer, entree, and dessert. Although most of our dishes included seafood, meat, or protein the restaurant is more than accommodating for any dietary restrictions. Everything tasted so fresh (so clean) and carefully prepared. We were expecting 4 courses, and ended up with 8 by the end of our meal. The first few courses were extremely spicy (loved it), but our tongues were given a break with more mild dishes at the end of the meal. I can't remember the names of each dish, but we were served a soup, two different salads, a whole grilled rockfish (pictured above), a curry dish, pad see ew, another dish with mussels, and sticky rice with mango for our dessert. Chef Taw also surprised us with a beautiful plate of fruit (picture below) with a candle to celebrate.

Did I mention Thai X-ing allows guests to BYOB? Yes, that's right. There is a place in DC that doesn't charge absurd amounts of money for your meal accompaniment. We came prepared with wine, and the restaurant was happy to provided glasses and a corkscrew.

I couldn't get over how outstanding our service was throughout the evening. Everyone was friendly, accommodating, and really wanted to make our experience unique and memorable. Chef Taw visited us at our table upstairs at the end of the evening, adding an even more personal touch to our meal.

TWSF and Chef Taw
This is a "must try" for any DC Thai food lover. Thai X-ing has limited seating on both levels, so be sure to call and make a reservation.
